Phyllostachys edulis Moso (Haubrich)

Also called Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys edulis. A running bamboo with a distinct groove above pairs of branches at mid-culm nodes. Produces fewer but larger culmes than most other Phyllostchys varieties. All Moso has on and off years for shooting and a two year leaf replacement cycle. The largest of the hardy bamboos. Shoots in spring. Young culms are covered with a velvety coat of soft hairs. It is one of the most used bamboos in China where it is used for food, timber, paper, plywood, flooring and many other things. This clone was proprogated from a seed in the 1970s by Richard Haubrich and usually shoots about 2 weeks earlier than the Anderson clone. Avaliability of shipping size divisions is sometimes limited because Moso does not want to product small culms.
