The height and diameter are physical measurerments that we take each year on that year's culms. Remember that a bamboo culm grows to its full height in the first year, usually in 90 days or less and never gets any taller or larger in diameter.

The low temperature is measured at a mid level elevation at the nursery. Other locations can vary by 5° or more. The mid elevation location is a good average of the temperature extremes.

Winter damage is a subjective evaluation of the grove. We walk the groves usually in Februrary and visually inspect the groves and note any leaf burn, leaf kill and culm damage and then estimate the damage.

First shoot is the date we observe the first shoot in the grove. In the spring we walk the groves each day, sometimes twice, and search for the first shoot of the season. This date is for our climate and your shooting will depend on your local conditions. The first 2 shooting seasons show the most variation and from then on the shooting is generally in the same range. The air temperature does not appear to affect the shooting time; we do not measure the soil temperature. Wet or dry springs appears to produce more variation in the shooting date than any other variable.
