About us

MidAtlantic Bamboo is a commercial bamboo nursery and our full-time profession. We started growing bamboo in 1980 with a single grove of Phyllostachys aurea. From that start we now have over 90 varieties and have created a business out of our obsession with this most unique and wonderful plant. If you ever have a concern, question or problem with any of our products, procedures or policies, please discuss them with us. If at all possible, we will do whatever is necessary to resolve the matter to your satisfaction. We want and need your business and will appreciate each and every purchase.

Availability

We do our best to maintain our groves to try to produce shipping sizes; however, bamboo has a mind of its own and wants to produce custom size plants (plants too large to ship by UPS), If we do not have your variety in the size selected, you will have these options: 1) Select a different size. 2) Use your credit card and place your order for later shipment. (Your card will be charged when the plant is dug.) 3) We will put you on our waiting list and notify you when the plant is available. If you are still interested, you can place your order then. Orders that are guaranteed with a credit card are filled first in the order received. After those orders are filled, we notify those on the waiting list in the order received and, if you are still interested, fill your order.

Bamboo size

We sell our plants based on a letter code rather than a gallon size. We have found that gallon sizes do not relate too well to bamboo plants but as a guide you can use the following as a general reference.

"A" size (tiny) = 1 gallon (up to 12" tall, 6 to 8" root ball weighing 4 to 8 pounds)
"B" size (good) = 2 to 3 gallon (up to 36" tall, 8" to 10" root ball weighing 8 to 16 pounds)
"C" size (better) = 3 to 5 gallon (up to 8' tall, 10" to 12" root ball weighing up to 30 lbs)
"D" size (best) = 5 to 10 gallon (up to 12' tall, 12 to 14" root ball weighing up to 70 pounds - has to be cut back to 6' for shipping)

Our C and D size plants would normally be considered field specimens by many; however, we consider our custom-dug divisions as our field specimens. Our custom-dug plants start at 12 feet tall and go up to 50 feet. All custom plants have to be quoted per plant and start at $250 and go up to several thousand depending on the variety and size.

Our recommendation for the best dollar value:

Most ground cover bamboo - select A or B size.

In the taller bamboos for UPS shipping - select the C Size. Usually the C80 shipping size can be shipped without having to cut the culm back.

D size is the best when you pick up or have the bamboo delivered.

Cancellations

Cancellation of our standard sizes, A, B, C and D made prior to packaging will be refunded in full. For cancellations after packaging there is a $10 per plant handling fee. All remaining amount will be refunded. Cancellation of Custom dug orders: there is no refund for any plants already dug, Any bamboo that has not been dug will be refunded in full. Any consultation fees will still apply with no refund.

Delivery

On large orders it may be advisable to pick up your plants here or have them delivered as opposed to shipping.

We can deliver up to 70 C size plants or 30 D size plants. All custom size plants and quantities above these must be picked up or shipped by dedicated freight.

Our delivery charge for the quantities above: $2.25 per loaded mile (one way mileage). There is an additional $125.00 charge for each overnight stay required for the delivery (both ways).

Custom-dug orders, depending on size and quantity, can be picked up, delivered by us or shipped by dedicated freight. Prices for dedicated freight delivery can be quoted when you provide the delivery address.

Guarantee

We want you to be happy with your purchase from us and will make every effort to accommodate any reasonable request. Upon receipt of your order if you are not satisfied, you can return it at your expense for a refund, excluding shipping.

Size A and Size B bamboo
We will replace any A size or B size bamboo planted in the ground that does not survive* for one half (1/2) the current price plus shipping.
See exceptions below:

Size C and Size D bamboo
We will replace any C size or D size bamboo planted in the ground that does not survive* with your only cost being shipping plus a $10 per plant packaging and handling fee.

*Survive means your bamboo will produce new shoots by the second shooting season after planting.

See exceptions below:

Container grown bamboo
Since container grown bamboo, including house plants, requires more attention than field grown bamboo, there are just too many variables for us to offer a guarantee.

Flowering
Flowering - if your bamboo flowers and dies, so does ours; however, if it flowers during the first three (2) years after purchase, we will replace it with another bamboo, of your choice, for 1/2 the current price plus shipping and a $10 packing and handling fee.

Custom dug bamboo
Since we do not keep custom plants in normal inventory we do not offer a replacement guarantee on Custom dug bamboo. However, we take the same care in digging and stablizing our Custom dug plants that we take with our A, B, C and D plants. In the event your Custom dug plants do not survive we will make every effort to select plants that match your original plants at the current price.

Exceptions to guarantee
1. The temperature drops below the rated minimum.
2. Animals eat the bamboo.
3. Moso - it is one of the most difficult varieties to get started and has been reported to wait up to 5 years to produce a new shoot. With proper handling and careful planting of your Moso bamboo you should succeed.

If you used reasonable care in planting and watering your bamboo and it doesn't survive, just let us know and we will send a replacement as soon as possible based on the conditions above. In some cases we may not have the variety in stock; in this case we will send the replacement as soon as we can dig and stabilize a plant.

Local sales

We are open 7 days a week by appointment. E-mail or call us to arrange for a visit to purchase bamboo. The appointment is to make sure we are here which we usually are unless we are out bambooing. We have some varieties potted or b&b for immediate pickup. We also custom dig field specimens based on your requirements. If possible, we will dig and bag your selections on the day of your visit. If your order is too large or we are prevented from digging because of weather, we will set a date when you can pick up your order before you leave. Prices on custom-dug specimens vary based on the size, number of culms, root ball, and overall quality but will be quoted before digging. Local prices are the same as our mail order prices for our A through D size plants. However, often we have bamboos that are potted but do not meet the requirements for shipping, example: we may have a "D" size plant with a custom size root ball that is too large to ship; in this case we sell the plant at the "D" price but you get a custom size root ball.

Memberships

We are members of the American Bamboo Society, Southeast Chapter, Northeast Chapter and the Louisiana Gulf Coast Chapter. We will be glad to assist you in securing a speaker for your organization or group. Usually we can find a speaker who will provide a very informative talk. Many charge only for expenses, travel, lodging and meals. We are also members of the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association.

Recommendations

All ratings are estimates and should be used only as a guide as each bamboo will perform differently based on local growing conditions. Our recommendations are only broad general guidelines for your use in investigating what bamboo might meet your needs. All information is collected from many sources as well as personal observations. Any information provided by MidAtlantic Bamboo, on this web site, on the phone or in person, may not be accurate and in some cases cannot be verified. You should keep this in mind when evaluating any of the information you are given.

Referrals

In the event we do not have your selections in stock, we will be glad to refer you to a grower that we feel will provide you good plants with reliable service.

Sales tax

We are required to collect sales tax on all local retail sales and mail order sales to Virginia residents. The current rate is 5.0 percent before adding shipping cost.

Shipping

We use UPS ground for shipping, charging only the UPS rates for your zone. We do not charge a handling fee or any other fees except those charged by UPS. Upon receiving your order we will send you an acknowledgment with the estimated shipping date. Once shipped, we will notify you of the actual date shipped. We try to ship on Monday or Tuesday so you will have your plants by the weekend. If we have the variety you select, we will ship the first Monday after receipt of your order. If we have to dig your order, it could take 3 to 4 weeks to ship. This allows us time to dig, if necessary, and stabilize the plant to the new root size. Email, call or write giving your zip code and we will figure your shipping charges for you.

Tours

Full walking tours of our groves take from 2 to 3 hours and include information on each grove and answering any questions you have. We try not to schedule more than 1 family per tour so we can devote our time to you. We hope you will respect our time and make a purchase to help cover the time we take with you.
