Phyllostachys edulis Moso Anderson

Also called Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys edulis. The grove was started at the Old Silverbrook Cemetary in Anderson SC in 1893 by Rufus Fant and has never flowered. Mr. Fant's grave overlooks the grove. It is running bamboo with a distinct groove above pairs of branches at mid-culm nodes. Produces fewer but larger culmes than most other Phyllostchys varieties. All Moso has on and off years for shooting and a two year leaf replacement cycle. Moso is the largest of the hardy bamboos. It shoots in spring and the young culms are covered with a velvety coat of soft hairs. It has smaller leaves than most of the Phyllostachys varieties. It is one of the most used bamboos in China, where it is used for food, timber, paper, plywood, flooring and many other things. Avaliability of shipping size divisions is sometimes limited because Moso does not want to product small culms.
