Phyllostachys aurea bamboo is the most commonly cultivated bamboo in the U.S. It is easily identified by one of several short internodes at the base of some of its culms which resemble the hand grip of a walking cane. Although the culms are green until old, the name Phyllostachys aurea "Golden" bamboo was first published by Carriere so the name P. a. "Golden" bamboo. It is a very aggressive spreader in areas with warm summers. Although listed as 1 3/4 inches maximum diameter, it has been observed to reach 2 1/2 inches in favorable locations. It is used worldwide as an ornamental. Culms are used for interior decoration, fishing rods, walking sticks, umbrella handles, and many other crafts projects. P. aurea bamboo was first introduced in the US in 1883 and in the early 1900s; it has been introduced from many sources.
